Concerning Communion:
We believe in regularly receiving Holy Communion, because we follow Jesus' commandment to do that in his rememberance. All baptized people are welcome to receive communion here. We believe that someone is baptized into the Christian Church and not into a denomination. God washes away our sins in baptism and not the person doing the baptism. We believe in Jesus' presence in the bread and wine.
We typically receive communion with bread and wine (just as Jesus and his disciples did). We receive the bread on our hand by placing one hand over the other. Full communion is made with the bread alone.
Now concerning the wine. We recognize that some people cannot or wish not to receive the wine. We use a common cup (chalice) to receive the wine. This is typically done by taking a sip from the cup.
If you do not wish to take a sip from the cup, there are three options. 1) Simply leave the altar rail. 2) Place your arms across your chest. This signifies that you do not wish to receive the cup. The words of adminsitration will be said. 3) Leave the bread on your hand and the Eucharistic Minister will dip the bread in the wine and place it on your hand or on your tongue. If you wish to have it placed on your hand, please leave your hand extended. (We discourage people from dipping their own bread to reduce the incidence of disease from numerous people putting their fingers in the cup. Disease is typically transmitted by our hands. The ministers use hand sanitizer prior to distributing communion.)
People who do not receive communion may come to the altar rail and receive a blessing from a priest by crossing your arms across your chest.
